Wright State Sweeps Conference Tournament

First of all, I'd like to apologize for not writing in a few weeks. School has kept me very busy, and Terry Bigham at USBC told me to I had to keep up my GPA in order to continue writing. (haha!) Mr. Bigham was a big part in giving me this oppurtunity to blog, so I'd like to thank him for this oppurtunity and also take the time to inform him that my GPA is doing just fine!

Now to the bowling. In the past few weeks, our bowling program at Wright State has made great progress. We competed in the Kegel Collegiate in Illinois last month. Although we struggled at times, both the men and women's team cashed in the tournament. In fact, our teams have cashed in every tournament so far this season. This is one of our team goals.

Another one of our team goals was to win a tournament before Christmas. The women's team accomplished this in our very first tournament. The guys came extremely close in the Pikeville tournament, but we came up just short, finishing third. This weekend however, the men's as well as the women's team broke through with big tournament wins. In fact, both teams won two tournaments this past weekend.

This past weekend consisted of two separate tournaments: one on Saturday and one on Sunday. They were American Heartland Conference tournaments held in Westland, Michigan. Saturday we bowled on the Scorpion. We bowled well all day, especially towards the end of day. After starting off with a slow start in baker, our guys came back with a couple big blocks, gaining 300 pins on the field with just 5 or 6 games. The highlight of our day was when the team shot a three game block of 814 (that includes 60 bonus pins). At the end of the tournament, we had captured our first tournament win of the season. The women also won their tournament on Saturday.

Sunday was the same format, but on the Viper pattern. Scores were fairly low for the field; however, we had a lot of bowlers finish at the top of the field. Wright State bowler Jay Foote led the field, followed by teammate Curtiss Rasnic, and finishing 4th was Justin Marcinko. All six of the bowlers did very well, and it showed on the results. Going into the bakers, we had a solid lead. We kept bowling great in bakers, winning again on Sunday. The women won also; they have a perfect record in the Conference, winning all three tournaments.

This past weekend has gave the team a lot of confidence. We bowled great all weekend. We made great moved as a result of good communication. This weekend (November 14-15) is our host tournament, the Raider Classic. Hopefully we can bring in a nice size crowd to root on the hometown town! We're expecting great things for this weekend, as we try to continue our success on the lanes. ---Go Raiders!

Wright States finishes third at Orange & Black

This past weekend was the Orange and Black Classic. The format was six team games on Saturday and 16 Baker games on Sunday. After the Baker games, the top eight teams advanced to best-of-five Baker match play. All day Saturday we bowled well, but we really got going in Game 5, shooting over 1,100. Going into Sunday, we were in seventh place. Although the top eight made match play, we wanted to move up the rankings and get a good seed for match play. We bowled phenomenal on Sunday, especially toward the end of the 16 Baker games. We finished the last block of four games, shooting a 925. We made up a huge gap that separated us from the top five teams. Although we only gained one position, we were the talk of the tournament. I was very impressed by our teamwork on the lanes. Congratulations to teammate Greg Patz, who shot 1,298 in six games and finished fourth in the field. He was awarded All-Tournament team honors.

We met Vincennes in the first round of match play. We continued our great bowling, defeating them 3-0. The second round had us against Calumet College. After taking the first game, we ended up losing 3-1. However, it was a very successful tournament, finishing third.

We have a lot of confidence in our ability after a strong finish in the Orange and Black. We have been working very hard at practices and it’s going to show on the lanes. We all know we can strike. It’s going to be the team aspect of bowling that is going to help us succeed. We have been working very hard to learn how to communicate with one another and to make sure everyone has got their head in the game. I think we are a very good team, and our commitment to one another is going to allow us to do great things on the lanes.

This coming weekend we compete in the Kegel Classic in Addison, Ill. We have the confidence, ability, and commitment that it takes to be a great team. I’m excited for the remainder of the season, as I’m expecting great things as we grow as a better team. Until next time, good luck to everyone on the lanes, and go Raiders!

Through the Eyes of a First Year Bowler at Webber International

My name is Katie Thornton and I am one of the two freshman competing with the inaugural Webber Warriors women’s bowling program this year.

Webber International is a small business school located in Babson Park, Fl that got my attention after receiving a phone call from the head bowling coach, Joe Slowinski, who presented me with the opportunity of a lifetime. WIU offers me the ability to learn from the best and also receive a degree in business.

After several weeks of practice and team building I’ve never been more excited for a tournament than my first college competition in Milwaukee. My team consists of seven woman from around the globe. We come from Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Brazil, England, Florida, New York and Virginia, all with different backgrounds but are here to live the Webber Way.

I’m expecting our first tournament to be a huge learning experience for all of us and especially for me since I’m new to the college bowling atmosphere. I can’t wait to travel to Milwaukee in two weeks and I look forward to writing in the future about my experience as a new college bowler and what it is like to live the Webber Way.

….

The lady warriors just finished the first tournament in program history with a solid 2nd place finish in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. The six of us stepped on the lanes with different feelings. My teammate Ashly Galante saw the tournament as her step back into college bowling and Hayley Beavis as her first tournament in her last year. For the rest of us it was a whole new experience.

We started our warm up 30 minutes before practice and that was when in sunk in that I was really at my first college tournament. We bowled 6 team games the first day with a total of 5739 which put us in 2nd place. Day two started off with 3 team games and went into 10 baker games. After excellent scores in the team games that morning we gained 150 pins on the first place team but we struggled in baker giving us a solid 2nd place finish in our first tournament of the season. I can truly say that tournament is a moment I will never forget.

Continued Success for Wright State

Just four years ago, I was getting ready to try out for my high school bowling team. I was confident I would make the team, but unsure whether I'd be good enough to bowl on the varsity team. I was told I needed to average 175 to have a chance. My freshman year of high school bowling I averaged in the 180s and was starting for the varsity team. At that point in my career, I didn't have too much talent, and I had never bowled on a sport pattern. A similar story could be told for my Wright State teammate, Ricky Brown. He did not bowl regularly until his sophomore year in high school.

Four years later, we are traveling as freshman to Wisconsin with our Tier 1 college team. This proves that opportunites are endless in the sport of bowling. If you want to compete on a high level, all you have to do is surround yourself with good coaches and bowlers. If you put in the time to learn about the game, and travel to a competitve tournament every once in awhile, you're on your way. In the last few years, I've gained an enormous amount of knowledge about the game by surrounding myself with experienced bowlers, and also competing in tournaments. I will admit, there's a lot more to learn, and it's an ongoing process. But the opportunites are out there for everyone, and I encourage bowlers out there to strive to reach their desired goals.

Now back to Wisconsin. It was hosted at AMF Bowlero in Wawautosa. There were 45 men's teams and 27 women's teams. We bowled nine team games and 10 Baker games over two days. I bowled well the first day, and not so well the second day. Overall, I averaged exactly 200. Our men's team cashed, finishing in 11th place. Our women's team cashed as well, finishing in 7th. Heidi Sanders led the women, finishing third in the tournament.

The Week 2 team rankings have came out. Our men are ranked No. 6 in the country, and the women's team is No. 2. Our next tournament is the Pikeville Orange and Black tournament in Dayton, Ohio.
